International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 26, which represents terminal security personnel at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) have agreed to an extension of their negotiations for a new labor agreement, averting a threatened strike for Sunday, Nov. 1. The new deadline for a possible strike, if the two parties fail to reach an agreement, is set for 5 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
“Negotiations will continue with the assistance of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. Local 26 represents about 250 watchmen. They work at terminals that handle roughly 85% of the cargo moving through the Port of Long Beach and 33% at the Port of Los Angeles. These ports are a central link in the nation’s supply chain,” PMA said in an Oct. 30 statement.
We are closely monitoring the situation and will communicate material developments as they become available. Customers with time-sensitive cargo should contact their local South East World Wide Chicago, Ltd representative to review individual shipments and routing options.
